In high school varsity football games Friday night, North Stanly and West Stanly both hosted conference games while Albemarle played a conference match-up on the road.

North Stanly 68, South Stanly 6

The Comets bounced back from a conference loss the previous week and posted the biggest margin of victory the school has had in football against the Bulls Friday night.

North Stanly (5-3, 2-1 conf.) beat South Stanly (0-8, 0-3) by 62 points, which ranks fifth all-time in terms of margin of defeat in South’s history. The Comets have won nine straight against the Bulls and have nearly evened the all-time series between the two schools. South still leads all-time 26-24.

The Comets’ 68 points rank third all time in school history for points scored in a game and is the biggest margin of victory for a North Stanly team against a county opponent.

Cam Smith had a huge night for North with 100 yards rushing on four carries with two touchdowns. Smith also returned two punts for touchdowns in the game, while fellow running backs Jay Jackson and Juice Lilly also scored rushing touchdowns. Chance Blake had a 32-yard touchdown pass to Colson Palmer in the second quarter, and Connor Lupole posted an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

North’s Jaylon McCoy also put points on the board, returning a blocked punt 10 yards for the score in the second quarter.

South ended a three-game streak of being shut out when Davion McPhatter posted an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

North led 14-0 after one quarter, then outscored South 41-6 in the second to lead 55-6 at halftime. North added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“I was proud of my team playing hard despite being down five starters,” North head coach Scott Crisco said. “The young guys made the most of their opportunities…we played well in all aspects of the game: offense, defense and special teams.”

Crisco added his coaching staff “did an awesome job filling players for those that were out.”

The Comets host Mount Pleasant Friday while South Stanly travels to Jay M. Robinson (7-1, 3-0). The Bulldogs beat Union Academy (1-7, 0-3) last Friday 49-0.

Mount Pleasant 56, Albemarle 21

The Bulldogs (2-6, 1-2 conf.) suffered the team’s fourth loss in five games and the third straight loss in as many seasons to the Tigers (6-2, 3-0 conf.).

Albemarle jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage when quarterback Dre Davis scored on a 65-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs finished with 114 rushing yards on 18 carries, with Davis leading the way with 59 yards on three carries.

Davis later added a second-quarter TD pass to Zyion Geiger, and Geiger hauled in an Ander Artis pass for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Davis led Albemarle with 136 passing yards, completing 10-of-16 throws, while Artis added 79 yards going 5-for-8. Geiger finished with eight catches for 124 yards and the two TDs.

Mount Pleasant outscored the Bulldogs 28-6 in the second quarter and led at halftime 35-13.

Albemarle travel to Union Academy this Friday night.
