The Albemarle men’s soccer team had not earned a victory over the Gray Stone Knights since Oct. 2, 2013. Including one playoff loss, the losing streak had reached 10 games including a 5-0 loss earlier this season.

Albemarle scored three times in the first half and ended the streak with a 4-3 win Monday night at home over the Knights.

The win for Albemarle (7-7, 5-5 YVC) also ended a three-game losing streak this season.

Josh Megson, an All-Conference and All-Region forward, scored all four goals for the Bulldogs. He has been the team’s captain for three straight seasons.

One of his goals was assisted by his brother, freshman Lucas Megson, which Albemarle head coach Matt Moeller said was “a perfect pass.” Senior Randy Hernandez added the other assist for the Bulldogs.

Moeller said Albemarle “played with heart and earned their first victory in years over an elite team.”

He added the Bulldogs “were able to jump out to a strong lead, maintain a disciplined and unselfish level of play and then hang on as Gray Stone battled back.”

Albemarle scored three times in the first half before the Knights’ Chase Viscomi scored to make the score at the break, 3-1.

Early in the second half, Megson scored his fourth goal, proving to be the game-winning goal. The Knights’ Zack Norman and Marshall Overcash both scored in the second half for the game’s final margin.

Gray Stone (10-6-1, 8-3), according to Moeller, dominated the final 20 minutes and nearly tied the game numerous times. He credited his team’s defense and goalie Da’Sean Horne.

Horne also mentioned Knights head coach Brad Harrington addressed the Bulldogs’ players after the game to congratulate them on the win. That act, Moeller said, “clearly [was] representing best of high school sports and Gray Stone.”
