Tuesday’s recanvass by the Stanly County Board of Elections changed the results of one local election race.
Johnny Chestnut, an incumbent who finished tied with Bill Peak after last week’s certification of votes, gained one vote in the recanvass to finish with 209 votes, one more than mayor pro-tem Peak.
Chestnut said he was glad to be staying on the board. He said it “shows that the citizens of this community have confidence in me and I’m glad that I’m going to be allowed to finish some projects for the town we’ve started. As always, I will keep the best interests of the citizens of this town at heart.”
Peak confirmed Tuesday he had submitted a request in writing for a recount, which has been scheduled for Thursday at 10:15 a.m. The Board of Elections will also be recounting the votes for Seat 1 Chief Justice of the N.C. Supreme Court.
