Statistics released this month show Stanly County generated an increased amount of tourism revenue compared to the previous year.

Numbers released by the Economic Partnership of N.C. showed tourism spending in Stanly raised $89.36 million in 2019, up 5.4 percent from the 2018 mark. The county’s percent increase was close to the state’s overall average increase of 5.6 percent per the report.

Out of the 100 counties in the state, Stanly ranked 49th in travel and tourism impact, generating a tourism payroll of $12.54 million in the county for last year.

The report said approximately 530 jobs were either directly or indirectly related to the tourism industry, with employment in the business increasing in Stanly by 2.1 percent with $650,000 more in payroll expenditures.

Revenue generated from local sales and occupancy taxes also increased in 2019 to $2.65 million, a 4.3 percent increase.

In terms of other counties in North Carolina with similar numbers in their population, Stanly’s numbers were ahead of counties like Columbus, Sampson, Granville, Duplin, Chatham and Franklin.

“Stanly County has continued to show an increase in tourism. With the new creative promotions, we have been able to hit a larger demographic while showcasing our attractions,” said Chris Lambert, director of the Stanly County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are very pleased with the recognition of our hard work and dedication for promoting this beautiful county and we hope to continue showcasing this area in the manner that it deserves.”
