Oakboro swears in new commissioner, mayor, names department chairs

At Monday’s organizational meeting of the Oakboro Town Commissioners, the commissioners swore in a new member, named a new mayor pro tem and announced which commissioners would serve as chair for the various municipal departments.

Incoming mayor Rodney Eury, new commissioner Fred Smith and incumbent commissioner Joey Carpenter all were sworn in by town clerk Leslie Hatley-Murray.

The board also unanimously elected Commissioner Latoya Jackson as mayor pro tem.

Eury also announced which commissioners would serve as chair for the town departments. Commissioner Brett Barbee will be in charge of budget and finance, while Fred Smith will chair the streets and cemeteries department.

Carpenter will be the new police commissioner, Jackson will be the commissioner over the parks and recreation department and Commissioner Bud Smith will be the public works commissioner.
