South Stanly falls in second-round home playoff match

South Stanly earned the the school’s first playoff win in several seasons last week, earning another home playoff game Friday night against a tough Starmount Rams squad.
The Bulls hosted a No. 9-seeded Rams team which entered Friday’s second-round playoff game with 10 wins in 11 games this season, with Starmount’s only loss coming to Mount Airy by three.
The visitors broke the game open in the second half and went on to a 37-19 win over South Stanly.
South (6-5) took the first lead of the game with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. Carter Callicutt broke through the line for a 28-yard touchdown run, with the extra point putting the Bulls up 7-0.
Several minutes later, the Rams (11-1) answered when Savian Bilips scored from nine yard out. The extra point attempt failed on a bad snap, keeping South in front, 7-6, with 23 seconds left in the first quarter.
Starmount took the lead with 2:53 left in the first half when QB Luke Colllins scored on a two-yard keeper, with a two-point conversion putting the visitors up 14-7.
South immediately answered in the first two minutes of the second half. Quarterback Kaleb Richardson found Jasiah Holt on a swing pass, and Holt avoided three would-be tacklers in the Rams secondary for a 52-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good, leaving the Bulls trailing by one, 14-13.
Again, Starmount answered with a scoring drive, this one 45 yards capped off by Cody Hernandez, who ran up the middle and carried the pile 20 yards downfield for a touchdown. Another successful two-point conversion made it a two-possession game, with the Rams leading 22-13.
The Rams extended the lead later in the third when Collins scored his second rushing TD of the game. The two-point conversion put Starmount up 30-13.
Starmount added a touchdown in the final six minutes of the game as well.
The Bulls finished the season with a record above .500, claiming the 1A championship from the split Yadkin Valley Conference.
