On Feb. 19, 1925, the Albemarle Skating Rink was formally opened to the public. It was managed by J.R. Pope and was located on West Main Street on the second floor of the building that was occupied by the Albemarle Novelty Store. (This building is currently occupied by Connie’s Coffee & Cafe) Originally there were two nightly sessions, 7-8:30 p.m. and 8:30-10 p.m. An orchestra provided entertainment, and an instructor was on hand to provide lessons. By March, Pope found it necessary to enlarge the rink. In addition, he purchased additional new skating equipment and extended the hours of operation. A free hour, primarily for beginners, was from 6-7 p.m. and the hours for the two regular sessions was extended to 7-9 p.m. and 9-10:45 p.m. For reasons unknown, the skating rink didn’t last. An ad from the Albemarle Press on June 4, 1925 shows the space above the Albemarle Novelty Store was for rent. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
