The North Stanly football team opened the season Friday on the road against an Anson County squad to whom the Comets had never lost. North played the team in the program’s first three years of existence, then added a fourth win last season.

North used a dominant second-half performance to make it 5-0 lifetime against Anson with a 28-6 win.

The Comets (1-0) led 7-6 at halftime after going up early on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Shaver to Jaylon McCoy.

Anson (0-1) narrowed the gap to one point at halftime with a touchdown, but the second half was all Comets on the scoreboard. Juice Lilly had touchdown runs of one and eight yards, while Justice Gramling hauled in a Shaver pass for a 30-yard touchdown.

“We had a slow start, having to knock off the cobwebs,” North head coach Chad Little said. “Anson is a good football team and I’m happy to get out of Wadesboro with the win. It was a whole-team win; even the ball boys did their job.”

The North coach noted Shaver was playing his first varsity game at quarterback, and he had good protection from Seshaun Swindell and the rest of the Comets’ offensive line.

Little also noted Lilly and Aden Allsbrook for shutting down Anson’s talented senior running back, Jazear Griffin. Gramling also added on the defensive side a second-half interception to seal the win.

“Our defensive line had a good game getting pressure,” Little said.

Special teams wise, Noah Carter converted 4-for-4 on extra points for the Comets.

North Stanly will be on the road Friday at East Rowan (0-1). The Mustangs opened the season Friday with a 46-6 home loss to North Rowan.
