In preparation for possible flooding which may happen with incoming weather this week, the Stanly County Board of Education unanimously approved a motion Tuesday night to delay the start of the 2024-24 school year if necessary.

Stanly County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jarrod Dennis said he has spoken with members of the county’s Emergency Management department, who told him Stanly was going to have “a significant rain event” with the approaching Tropical Storm Debby. Dennis said he was told Tuesday the rains are “supposed to produce significant flooding across the county” by Thursday afternoon, with school slated to start Thursday.

Dennis said to make things easier for student information services, he asked the board to pass a motion which, if necessary, would allow school to start Aug. 12.  Those students in staggered starts would start the number of days later which they were originally scheduled to start. For example, students originally scheduled to start Friday, which would be one day after the original start date of this Thursday, would then start on Tuesday.

Dennis said he would decide Wednesday whether to delay the start of school to Monday.
