The Stanly County Board of Commissioners appointed a new member to the Board of Trustees of the county’s library system at its June meeting.
Nancy Deeck was appointed to take over the term of Kaye Poole, who resigned in October 2023. At a previous commissioners’ meeting, the questions of a conflict of interest regarding one potential nominee for the board was questioned.
During the June meeting, Commissioner Brandon King said he and the board had gotten answers regarding the nomination of Robin Davis. Sara Hahn, director of the Stanly County Public Library, said in the meeting questions about Davis arose because of the nominee’s possible interest in purchasing the property the Norwood library currently is in.
“After some investigation from our county attorney and more discussion, it appears that would not be a conflict in interest,” Hahn said. “She would just need to recuse herself from any votes about anything that could be a potential investment, financial interest or gain for her.”
Hahn said the consensus of the library board was to elect Deeck, adding the board’s consensus was Deeck’s application “was very well-rounded.” Hahn said Deeck had served on the Friends of the Library board for several years, including currently, and added, “she participates in a lot of our fundraising events, and so, we feel like she has a very invested interest in things that are happening countywide with our library system.”
King moved to nominate Deeck for the board, while Commissioner Peter Asciutto nominated Davis. Deeck received five votes (King, vice chair Mike Barbee and commissioners Patty Crump, Scott Efird and Trent Hatley) while Asciutto and board chair Bill Lawhon voted for Davis.
