Albemarle water main break closes Stanly Commons

A water main break in Albemarle Thursday shut down service for part of the city and forced county offices to close.

According to the City of Albemarle’s Facebook page, a water leak happened on North Second Street between Park Ridge Road and Hawthorn Avenue.

David Fath, public information officer for Albemarle, said a 20-inch water main had a leak at the joint because of vibrations under the road. He said city crews put a clamp on the joint and repairs were completed as of Thursday afternoon.

Thursday afternoon, water was shut down for the Stanly Commons and residents of Second Street, East Street, Park Ridge and Salisbury Avenue to allow crews to make repairs.

County Manager Andy Lucas said water went out at the Commons around 11:30 a.m. Working with the city, Lucas said he was told it would be late afternoon before being repaired. With the restroom facilities unavailable and staff not being able to wash their hands, the decision was made to close the Commons for the day.

Other county departments, such as the public library and the Senior Center, remained open.

Lucas said he expected the Commons would be open under normal hours Friday.
