Stanly County Schools’ school health advisory council, in partnership with Safe Kids Coalition, will host a community health fair at Atrium Stanly’s Family Education Center 5-8 p.m. May 22. It will feature community vendors, door prizes and a national speaker who will talk about drug and alcohol prevention.

“We have not done a community fair in quite some time,” SCS Executive Director of Student Services Beverly Pennington said. “So everybody that’s come together to help with this is super excited that we’re back to where we can do such a large in-person event.”

The keynote speaker will be nationally-recognized trainer Jermaine Galloway, who will discuss the epidemic of teenage vaping along with how to prevent young people from getting easy access to drugs and alcohol, Pennington said.

Galloway, a former Idaho law enforcement officer, has more than 24 years of experience in alcohol and drug education, enforcement and prevention. At 6-foot-9, he goes by the nickname “Tall Cop” and is regarded as “one of America’s top experts in various drug and alcohol trends,” according to his website.

He gives more than 200 presentation each year, per his website, and has trained more than 650,000 people nationwide in drug or alcohol prevention and enforcement.

Galloway will conduct a workshop “High In Plain Sight: Current Drug Trends” 8-11 a.m. May 23 inside the Gene McIntyre Room at Stanly County Commons, though registration is required (scan the QR code on the picture below).

There will be 22 vendors at the community health fair including Stanly County Project Lazarus, Stanly County Family YMCA, NC Cooperative Extension, Stanly County Minority Health Council and Albemarle Parks and Recreation.

There will also be three food trucks.

Door prizes will also be given away. People have to be present to win the door prizes, which will be given away every 15 minutes from 5-7 p.m. The grand prize will be given out closer to 8.

“There’s a lot of people that this is close to their heart and they’ve really worked hard to get this thing planned,” Pennington said. “It’s just going to be a fun night.”
