Alcoa

The Environmental Protection Agency office in Atlanta had approved the environmental impact statement from Alcoa regarding the construction of the company’s third potline at the Badin Works.

Alcoa officials said the third potline and its auxiliary construction would cost around $70 million and the construction work would require as many as 500 workers.

Contest

Both contestants from the Albemarle club won first place honors Thursday in the zone 10 competition of the Optimist International oratorical contest in Kannapolis.

They were David Grigg, a ninth grader at Albemarle Senior High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Grigg of Albemarle, and Patricia McNeill, a seventh grader at South Stanly High School and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin McNeill of Norwood.

They would advance to the district regional eliminations April 14 in Charlotte.

Also competing in the zone competition from Stanly County were Freddie Morgan and Ann Herlocker Smith representing the Badin-Harristown Optimist Club.

Concerts

Ferrante & Teicher was the featured attraction of the Stanly County Community Concerts’ upcoming 1981-82 season.
