Stanly baseball players receive All-State honors
Players from high school baseball teams representing schools in Stanly were recently named to the All-District and All-State teams by the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association.
Below are the players representing schools in Stanly County.
North Stanly
Three Comets were named to the 2A All-State team from the Comets, who went 22-3 and won the Yadkin Valley Conference regular-season: in catcher Chance Blake and pitchers Nic Melton and Cole Smith.
Melton, who will be playing for the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs this spring, hit .421 and led North with 34 RBIs. On the mound, Melton was 7-1 with a 0.44 earned-run average, striking out 93 batters in 41 innings.
Blake hit .341 for the Comets with 25 hits including four doubles, and 19 runs driven in. He also threw out 12 of 14 baserunners trying to steal this season.
Smith was 5-1 on the mound for North with a 1.89 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 30 innings. At the plate, he hit .344 in 78 plate appearances.
South Stanly
Senior third baseman Trevor Tucker had a big season in his final year of high school baseball.
Tucker batted .409 with 27 hits in 66 at-bats with one double and seven RBIs.
