South Stanly women end 19-game losing slide with victory

The South Stanly women’s basketball team broke a 19-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 61-25 win Friday night at the North Moore Mustangs.

South (1-13, 1-5 YVC) had not won a game since Jan. 29, 2019 when the Bulls won at Uwharrie Charter, 50-47.

D’Nysia Wall led four in double figures for the Bulls with 18 points. Kalea Legrand had 15 points, while Sadie Lee and Jacy Noble scored 12 points each.

The Bulls outscored the Mustangs (1-14, 0-7) by 12 in the opening quarter then shut North Moore out in the second to lead at halftime, 28-8.

“We knocked down some shots in the first quarter to get a quick lead,” South head coach Sean Whitley said.

“Our defense was strong all night. We forced a lot of turnovers that led to easy baskets.”

Whitley said the team has been working hard and improving in practice, adding the team deserved Friday’s result.

“Now we just want to build on that success and continue to compete,” Whitley said.

South Stanly hosts Chatham Central (5-7, 3-3) Friday night.
