Endy
The Stanly County Board of Education Monday night selected a site for the new Endy School, subject to approval of the county commissioners.
The site, just behind the present school property, is owned by Glenn Efird and consists of about 15 acres. The projected building cost was at more than $1.4 million.
Chamber
The Stanly County Chamber of Commerce had exceeded its 1981 membership goal. With a goal of $7,500 in new memberships, the organization had already received more than $10,000.
“In spite of rumors of recession and tight economic conditions, our determined group of workers exceeded their goal,” membership team chairman Larry Hatley said. “This has once again proven that membership in the Chamber is a marketable investment.”
Stanly Tech
Stanly Technical College’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda was named the top chapter in North Carolina at the conclusion of the annual state conference in Wilmington.
Attending the meet were 23 students from the chapter, the business organization’s advisers and Robert J. Washer, vice president for student services and personnel.
Stanly Tech also received awards in the five chapter events and 11 individual student awards.
During the election of officers, Martha Sue Harris, a student in the Stanly Tech/UNCC program, was chosen state vice president.
Placing first in their events were Brenda Barbee, business administration, and Elaine Hargett, office procedures. Second place certificates went to Judy Saunders, in the Data Processing I event, and Rhonda Harkey in the business law event. Cathy Thompson placed fifth in the business communications event; Kathy Almond, third in extemporaneous speaking; and the chapter, fourth in the most outstanding project event.
Sherry Yow, a 1980 graduate of the college’s secretarial science program, was elected secretary of the State PBL Alumni Association.
