UP ON THE ROOF: School leaders raise funds

Norwood Elementary School’s recent fundraiser brought excitement and community spirit to new heights — literally.
Principal Kate Blazer and Assistant Principal Carolyn King took to the school’s roof as part of an incentive to motivate students and families to donate towards new furniture for classrooms.
And it worked, as Wednesday’s event netted around $12,500 for the school, bringing excitement to the students, staff and community, all eager to watch the school leaders spend the day on the roof.
The idea behind the fundraiser was simple but effective: if Norwood Elementary met its fundraising goal, Blazer and King would spend the day perched atop the school. Families contributed generously, with funds going directly to purchase new desks, chairs and other furniture designed to improve student learning environments.
“It was a fun way to get everyone involved, and we’re thrilled by the outpouring of support,” said Blazer, who waved to students from the roof.
Blazer said when she began at the school last year, it was a “D” school on the state’s low performing list.
“After all of the work and changes we put in, we moved to a ‘C’ school and are no longer low performing,” Blazer said. “The goal behind this fundraiser was to provide our students with the tools and learning environments conducive to keeping that hard work and learning going.”
