PEEKING INTO THE PAST – Humoresque Grill

The history of the restaurant and service station at the intersection of what today is Old U.S. 52 and N.C. Highway 8 north of New London has been difficult to trace. According to local historian Calvin Gaddy, the building was constructed during the 1930s. Ads for the Three Point Service Station appear in The Stanly News & Press as early as 1938. Unfortunately, ads for the Humoresque Grill, sometimes referred to as the Humoresque Café, do not appear in The Stanly News & Press in June 1947. During late 1948 owners V.W. Woodard and H.W. Callicutt sold the business. It is not clear when he took over, but I.J. Little was in charge by the late summer of 1949 and still owned the business at least into the early 1950s. What happened after this point is unclear. According to Gaddy, the building was demolished in the 1980s. Please contact me at lpbramlett@hotmail.com if you can provide any additional history of this business and or the building. Thanks to John Williams for sharing this wonderful photo. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
