Fire Queen

Winner of the title of Miss Stanly Fire Queen was Lynn Eudy, representing Oakboro Rural VFD. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Eudy of Oakboro and was 16 and a junior at West Stanly.

First runner-up was Pam Tucker of Ridgecrest, with Janet Biles of New London placing third.

4-H

Three Stanly County 4-H’ers had come out on top in the 17-county district demonstration competition at South Rowan High School and would represent Stanly in the state contests during 4-H Club week in Raleigh July 25-30.

They were Jane Whitley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Whitley of Albemarle, a member of the Endy Clovers, first in sewing with “A Game that’s BOUND to be Helpful;” Janet Pickler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Pickler of New London, member of Ridenhour Progressors, first in poultry production and marketing with “Small Wonder;” and Ann Laton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Laton of Norwood, member of Norwood Greenfield, first in the girls’ electric demonstration with her rendition of “Time for Toast — Electrically.”

Football

Livingstone College of Salisbury had announced the signing of Paul Kluttz, a former West Stanly High School football player, to a grant-in-aid scholarship.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kluttz of Oakboro and had played at the fullback post for Coach Tom Rogers’ West Stanly Colts during the 1965 gridiron campaign.
