NCHSAA gives schools go-ahead conditionally to open sports
With the 2020 spring season having been shut down by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association due to COVID-19, the association contacted school athletic directors about moving forward into the summer schedule.
Traditionally, summer months have been the time for 7-on-7 football scrimmages, basketball camps and other sports hosting youth camps as fundraisers for their respective programs.
Tuesday, an email was sent to the athletic directors statewide from the NCHSAA saying under certain conditions sport preparation for the fall 2020 sports seasons may commence June 1.
However, that decision was conditional, according to Stanly County Schools assistant athletic director Sean Whitley. Opening schools and facilities depends upon the decision of each local education agency (LEA) to allow practice to begin.
Another condition would be the phase of reopening the state in which North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has decided to be in. Phase Two would allow some further opening up of the state and under certain conditions would allow teams to begin workouts and practice.
The NCHSAA basically informed athletic directors the fact that it will not supersede restrictions in place by LEAs or the governor.
