Swimmers from North Stanly, Gray Stone, compete at 1A/2A state meet

Fourteen swimmers, eight from North Stanly High and six from Gray Stone Day, made the trip to Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary to participate in the recent 2020 NCHSAA 1A/2A Swimming and Diving State Finals.

Junior Rachel Gibson of North Stanly earned the top individual finish of the group, placing third overall in the Women’s 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:07.27, in addition to a 1:01.46 time in the 100m butterfly, good for 11th place.

Freshman Christopher Kafitz of Gray Stone was 15th finisher in the men’s 500m freestyle, with a time of 5:21.44, and placed 20th in the 100m breaststroke, touching in at 1:08.63.

North Stanly sophomore Maci Holshouser recorded a time of 2:07.59 in the women’s 200m freestyle, good for 19th, with Payton Lorch, a Gray Stone freshman, also recording a 19th place finish in the Women’s 500m freestyle, clocking in at 5:52.00.

In the 200m medley relay, the North Stanly team, consisting of junior Alexandra Childress, Gibson, Holshouser and senior Kathryn Carpenter, earned a 15th place finish with a 2:00.23 time. Gray Stone, the 21st place team in the event with a 2:08.03 time, was represented by freshmen Isabella McGee and Riley Gleason, senior Kinsey Cook and sophomore Brooke Boger.

North Stanly’s 200m freestyle relay squad finished 16th, posting a 1:49.53 time, as senior Colbie Lentz joined Gibson, Holshouser and Childress in the lineup. Gray Stone’s unit posted a 1:52.71 time, good for the 20th spot, with Lorch swimming the third leg of the relay, along with McGee, Boger and Gleason.

Represented in the 400m freestyle relay by seniors Kelly Smith, Nicole Lowder, Emily Almond and Lentz, North Stanly clocked a 4:14.64 finish to take the No. 19 spot.

In the team competition, Carrboro captured the women’s title, with Pine Lake Prep earning the men’s championship. North Stanly’s women clinched the 21st spot, with the Gray Stone men finishing 50th.
