Atrium, Carolina Panthers partner for free sports physicals

Atrium Health has partnered with the Carolina Panthers and will provide  student-athletes free sports physicals at the beginning of June at Bank of America Stadium to school partners, including Albemarle, North Stanly, South Stanly, West Stanly and Gray Stone Day high schools in Stanly County.
The Heart of a Champion Day goes beyond a normal physical and includes EKGs to detect heart abnormalities that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Registration for students ends May 21.
The screenings include a review of the athlete’s medical history, a sports-specific medical and musculoskeletal exam, a heart exam and a vision test. The program is unique because of the heart screening, where all student athletes receive an EKG, which traces the heart’s electrical activity. A heart screening is performed to increase the chance of detecting a heart problem that could affect an athlete’s ability to participate in sports.
