The Friends of North Stanly Trails and Parks will hold the formal opening of the second section of the Falcon Trail Friday at 10 a.m. This event will be held at the second trailhead in the Richfield Park on N.C. Highway 49.
In 2010 the mayors of Misenheimer, Richfield and New London conceived the idea of connecting the three towns with a trail for walking, running and bike riding. It would connect all the parks and schools.
A not-for-profit group, The Friends of North Stanly Trails and Parks, was formed to build and maintain the facilities. Grants were secured for planning, securing property and building a portion of the trail.
In the fall of 2016, the first 2.74 miles of the Falcon Trail was completed and opened. This portion of the natural trail is mostly shaded and begins at the antique store just north of Misenheimer and travels to the Richfield Park.
The new addition of the trail has been named the Tom Webb section because of major contributions from Webb’s company, honoring him upon his retirement, to the Carolina Thread Trails. Webb is Albemarle native.
There are 2.5 miles of trail, which includes side paths, in the new section. The new section is graveled and connects Richfield Park to Danritch Drive by way of Tyson Park. Much of the new trail passes cultivated fields containing soybeans and cotton as well as pastures.
Individuals walking or biking from the antique store in Misenheimer to end of Danritch Drive would be traveling a total of 4.7 miles, which does not include side paths to the Richfield School.
The public is invited to attend the formal opening.
