The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary (SAWA) has kicked off its 2024-25 calendar year, with a new slate of officers and committee chairs, and newly assigned Salvation Army Corp officers Majors Ray and Whitney Morton.
The SAWA officers for this year are Co-presidents Carolyn Carpenter and Becky McRorie, 1st Vice President Robin Odell, Treasurer Cheryl Webb (with assistant Barbara Albright), Corresponding Secretary Kathy Marlow, Chaplain Connie Nolan, Historian Gladys Stafford, and Parliamentarian Pam Kohler.
It takes many active members to get the mission of the auxiliary accomplished, so the officers will be supported by the following committee chairs: Jean Henderson (Finance), Jan White (Membership/Yearbook), Pat Wickliff (Nominating), Vickie Julian (Publicity/Newsletter), Pam Kohler (Social), Alice Gamble (Greeter), Pam Kohler/Jean Henderson/Gladys Stafford (Food Pantry), Robi Hecht/Cheryl Webb/Lila Barnhardt (Community), Vickie Julian/Pam Rostonski (Scholarship) and Jewel Kee/Robi Hecht (Community Care).
There are five General Auxiliary meetings, on the fourth Tuesday of September, October, January, March and May. Opportunity for socializing with members and guests starts at 9:30 a.m., with the business meeting beginning at 10 a.m.
Depending on activities in process, there may be a guest speaker from the community at the general meetings.
The guest speaker for the Sept. 24 meeting will be newly assigned Salvation Army Corp officer Maj. Whitney Morton.
The meeting will be at the Salvation Army of Cabarrus County headquarters at 216 Patterson Ave SE, Concord.
There is a used book sale at each meeting.
The Community Care Workshops, held five times a year, are also opportunities to become involved and to socialize. The first Community Care Workshop of the 2024-25 calendar year will be 9:30 a.m. Oct. 9. All members as well as prospective members are encouraged to attend.
The annual Souper Bowl fundraiser will be held Feb. 18, 2025, at Central United Methodist Church, 30 Union St. N., Concord, with an inclement weather contingency date of Feb. 25, 2025. The public is invited to enjoy soup, dessert and fellowship.
SAWA needs new members, with fresh ideas and perspectives. There are multiple levels of membership, dependent on the individual’s ability to commit time and/or funds to the cause.
The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary was formed in the fall of 1990 to support the Salvation Army of Cabarrus and Stanly counties. The funds raised and the manpower supplied provide support for client services such as prescription drugs, emergency food assistance, utilities and rent, as well as ministry to nursing homes.
Projects this year are slated to include support for the Angel Tree Christmas Project for youth and seniors. Funds are also used to purchase items for the Tucker Center of Hope, scholarships for students in need and other activities for special situations.
A hygiene box for personal care items as well as a Little Library are also within SAWA’s scope.
