PEEKING INTO THE PAST: Palmerville Band

During the early 1900s, schools throughout the county were too small to support any sort of music program. Instead, members of the various communities formed local bands that would entertain at picnics, parties and other special events. According to History Center records, today’s photo of the Palmerville Cornet Band was taken at the home of Horace Meigs about 1907. The members of the band included, from left, front row: Alfred Bunch, Will Bell (band director), George Miller, Jim Coggin, Clarence Misenheimer and James Miller; back row: Ray Ingram, Charles Jenkins, Will S. Coggin, Roy Davis, Charles Coggin, and Mose Sheppard. Very little information is known about the Palmerville band. Short references in old newspapers about local performances between May 1907 and May 1908 are all that have been found. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
