There will be an event about expanding internet access across Stanly County at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Albemarle City Hall.

The event is free to the public. RSVPs are optional but not required.

Christopher Mitchell of the Institute for Local-Self Reliance in Minneapolis will speak about North Carolina’s broadband landscape and compare and contrast that with other states and successful policy approaches in other states.

Mitchell will then moderate a panel of business leaders and officials, including Greg Coltrain, executive vice present with RiverStreet Networks; Alan Fitzpatrick, CEO with Open Broadband LLC; Ken Russell with Pfeiffer University; and Kathy Almond, executive director of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce.

It will also feature a 30-minute question and answer session where people will be encouraged to ask Mitchell and the panel questions.

The speaking tour is organized by the Community Broadband Networks Initiative, the North Carolina League of Municipalities and NC Hearts Gigabit.

It’s the first of a 3-day broadband speaking tour that also includes stops in Fuquay-Varina and Jacksonville.

More information about the event can be found at http://www.albemarlenc.gov .
