Scoring was not an issue for the Albemarle varsity basketball team Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (7-7, 5-1) recorded a season-high points total in their 84-65 home win against South Davidson, including 29 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats (1-12, 1-5) had nine players who scored in the contest, though their defense was no match for the Bulldogs’ offensive effort.

Despite the high score, Albemarle was only 19-for-36 from the foul line in the game.

“We missed too many free throws and layups. I know we left at least 35 points out there,” Albemarle coach Marc Raye said. “I’m happy with the win for my guys and we had a great showing from my seniors. We have a makeup game Thursday and I’m looking forward to that game as well.”

Freshman point guard Marc Raye Jr., who finished with a team-high 29 points, did most of his damage late in the matchup. Senior guard Cameron Williams scored 16 while junior forward T’Ziah Quarles added 16 as well.

Freshman Ali Currie had a strong showing for the Bulldogs, recording nine as a starter; senior D’Sean Horne added eight off the bench.

Senior guard Jacob Byerly led South Davidson with 14 while junior Dylan DeLattre picked up 12.

After a shaky start to the season in which it lost seven of its first 10 games, Albemarle has won four consecutive contests as it prepares for a home matchup with Uwharrie Charter Academy (4-8, 3-3) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Eagles have won three of their past four games.

The road ahead gets tougher for South Davidson, who now has to travel to North Rowan to take on the 10-2 Cavaliers Friday. North Rowan sits atop the Yadkin Valley conference standings at 5-0, while Albemarle is tied for second with South Stanly at the 5-1 mark.

In what will likely be a highly contested game, the Bulldogs and Bulls will square off Jan. 31 at South Stanly.
