The annual Wreaths Across America event honors veterans during the holiday season by placing wreaths on their graves.

This Saturday will mark the sixth year in a row efforts in Stanly have grown.

At noon, volunteers, their families and the public are invited to a kickoff ceremony at Richfield Park. The flags of the six branches of the United States military will be honored, along with the singing of the national anthem and “God Bless America.”

In terms of wreaths placed, Stanly’s efforts have grown. After starting with 45 for Stanly Gardens of Memory, according to local coordinator Brandon Tucker, this Saturday 768 wreaths will be placed in Stanly along with a cemetery in Mount Gilead.

“We’ve been pushing it and a lot of people are seeing it and understand what exactly we are for, not just buying wreaths for Christmas. We are buying these in remembrance of those who have served this country and the reason we get to walk around on these grounds for free,” Tucker said.

Ceremonies across the country will all start at at the same time as Stanly’s event, to honor veterans across the country.

Those wanting to participate are asked to visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org for more information.
