Four members of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners were sworn into office in a reorganizational meeting conducted Monday night at Stanly Commons.

The meeting, led by County Manager Andy Lucas, took prior to Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting of the board.

Zach Almond, Mike Barbee, Lane Furr and Tommy Jordan all took oaths of office in front of friends, family and members of the community.

Commissioner Bill Lawhon also renewed his oath on Monday before the board went through reorganization procedures.

Lawhon made the motion to nominate Commissioner Matthew Swain as the board’s new chairman. No other nominations were made and Swain was unanimously elected.

Swain’s first act as chairman was to preside over the election of a vice chairman. Furr made the motion to nominate Ashley Morgan to the post; the motion passed unanimously.

The board then unanimously passed three public official bonds, including a $150,000 bond for finance officer Toby Hinson, $100,000 for tax administrator Clinton Swaringen and $50,000 for register of deeds Suzanne Lowder.

Continuing with the reorganization, the commissioners approved with a 7-0 vote nominations for the various committees and boards on which commissioners serve.

Lawhon and Swain were named to the Economic Development Board, while Barbee and Jordan will serve on the Consolidated Health and Human Services Board.

Almond joined the Library Board of Trustees and will serve as an alternate on the Airport Authority board for Morgan.

The new chairman of the Fire District Commission will be Furr and Barbee joins the Senior Services Board.

The Rural Transportation Planning Organization representative from the board will be Jordan, with Swain as the alternate.

Morgan will serve on the Stanly Water and Sewer Authority board, with Furr as an alternate. Almond will serve on the Centralina Council of Governments, with Barbee as alternate, while Lawhon will serve on the Cardinal Innovations Health Board.

In the final part of the meeting, the board approved the 2019 regular meeting schedule for the commissioners as well as the 2019 holiday schedule for county employees.
