Discussion of potential names for the downtown alleyway project, a possible self-service kayak rental kiosk at City Lake Park, a public hearing for a rezoning request and an update from Waste Management are among the topics scheduled for Albemarle City Council’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday inside City Hall.
According to the agenda packet, the council will consider several names that have been put forward regarding the alleyway project which stretches from West Main Street to King Street. The alleyway will become a pedestrian plaza with seating for outdoor dining and casual gathering.
It has been referred to by many names during council meetings including the King Alleyway and the Falcon Alleyway. The city has also enlisted help from the public for names via an online form. Some of the names submitted include Albemarle Alleyway, City Square Plaza, John Stanly Way, Court House Alley, Gene Starnes Alley, The Gathering Spot and Wiscassett Way.
Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Kiser will speak before council about the possibility of establishing a self-service kayak rental kiosk at City Lake Park, including how much it will cost and the maintenance/upkeep that would be required. If approved, the funding would occur in fiscal year 2023 and 2024, per the agenda packet.
Council will have a public hearing to consider the approval of an ordinance to rezone a portion of 330 N. Second St. at Montgomery Avenue from Neighborhood Business District (NBD) to Residential Office (RO). If approved, the property, which is the old Sinclair gas station, would be developed for a single family duplex or multi-family dwellings.
Marilyn Wells, regional manager for municipal and community relations with Waste Management, will provide an update before council regarding progress being made towards improving services for city residents. Wells last spoke to council in late January.
Council will also receive an update regarding the purchase of new Motorola radios for police and fire personnel and will approve a bid for the Albemarle Business Park electric underground construction to Dynetek Solutions.
