The Uwharrie Wampus Cats have named Jerry Min to be the first general manager in franchise history.
Min’s background includes more than 30 years of experience in sports and television. He retired recently from a leadership position at ESPN after a long career there. Early in his sports career, Min spent time working at WFMY in Greensboro.
Baseball has always been a major part of Min’s life and career. In recent years, he also got to enjoy following along as his son Ethan played baseball for Montreat College in western North Carolina.
“I have always wanted to be part of working with a sports team and the Wampus Cats position gives me that chance finally,” Min said. “We want to create a fun environment for the fans and players and I believe we are well on our way to achieving that.”
Min has spent much of his time since the Wampus Cats’ launch in late January building relationships with locals and the area business community as the team gets set for its inaugural season beginning this summer.
“In a short time, I have fallen in love with Albemarle and the surrounding area,” Min said. “The people, the towns and the countryside are wonderful, and the excitement continues to build everywhere we go when talking about the team. It’s exciting to be here and be a part of this.”
“We couldn’t be happier than to bring Jerry into this role,” said Wampus Cats team president Greg Sullivan. “He’s got the perfect knowledge, enthusiasm and approach to make our new team a hit right away, and we know he’s going to be a big part of the team’s success.”
The Wampus Cats will announce their schedule later this month and expect to get underway around Memorial Day. The team will play more than 40 games in all, including more than 20 at Don Montgomery Park.
