A chase that began in Norwood and reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour ended around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Anson County.

Norwood Police apprehended Kevon Dunlap, 22, who was driving in excess of 130 miles per hour, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.

Officers were attempting to stop Dunlap for an expired car tag but “as soon as the Norwood officer got out of his car, he sped off,” Norwood Police Chief James Wilson told The Stanly News and Press.

Law enforcement pursued Dunlap for about 20 minutes, along U.S. Highway 52, Pinkston-River Road, Dunlap Road and Grassy Island Road before eventually arresting him after he jumped from his car and fled on foot with a firearm in his hand, Wilson said.

No officers were injured as a result of the chase.

Dunlap, a convicted felon who was wanted for several felony warrants in Scotland County for discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon, was charged by Norwood officers for fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, possessing a firearm by a felon and discharging the weapon and reckless driving/wanton disregard, among others.

He is at the Stanly County Jail on a $150,000 secured bond.
