Quenby Mall
Six stores in the mammoth Quenby Mall shopping facility would open Thursday morning, Sept. 29.
Eight other stores and service establishments would open later, as soon as construction and installation of equipment had been completed.
Carl B. Morton, president of the Quenby Merchants Association, said a special opening ceremony would be conducted at 8:45 Thursday morning at the entrance to the mall, near the entrance to Harris-Teeter Supermarket.
Scheduled for opening on Thursday would be the following: Belk’s Department Store, Eckerd’s Drug Store, Friedman’s Jewelers, W.T. Grant Co. and Royce Shoes. Hardee’s, adjacent to the mall area, had been open for several months.
Other stores which would occupy quarters in the Quenby Mall area were: Harris-Teeter Supermarket, Honeycutt Shoes and Service, Kenwin Shops, Barber Shop, Singer Company, Harwood’s Florists, One-Hour Martinizing and First National Bank.
Veterinarian
Dr. Zane G. Bowles, recently of Asheboro, had announced he was opening a clinic for the practice of veterinary medicine in Albemarle. The clinic would be located on the premises with his residence, one mile out from the city limits on Ridge Street Extension.
E.J. Snyder
Grading and preliminary foundation work were underway on the 31,000-square-foot addition to the E.J. Snyder Company plant on Snuggs Road in Albemarle. When completed, this addition would bring to approximately 97,000 square feet the total floor space of the plant.
