Camp Barnhardt

James A. Graham, commissioner of agriculture for the state of North Carolina, would deliver the principal address at the dedication of the first camp in the Central N.C. Council’s new Boy Scout Reservation Sunday afternoon.

This first camp would be named in memory of the late John J. Barnhardt of Concord.

Barnhardt was the first president of the Central N.C. Council when it was organized in 1940. Since that time he had served as honorary president, was a member of the Region Six Executive Committee and was presented the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards for outstanding service to boyhood on the council and regional levels.

Communications

The American Telephone and Telegraph Company underground communications center at Stanfield was rapidly taking shape.

The tremendous crater dug from the field beside Love’s Mill Road last fall would soon be filled — by the gigantic underground communications center for the new Florida to New England coaxial cable.

The hole was being filled with 9,000 cubic yards of concrete and 2,300 tons of structural steel.

A Hot One

The mercury in the official government thermometer had reached 100 Monday making it the hottest day in Albemarle since June 20, 1959.
