Civitans

Francis Essic, longtime Civitan leader and basketball coach at Pfeiffer College, had been elected president-elect of Civitan International.

The election took place in Jacksonville, Florida, where Essic, a member of the Richfield club, defeated Dale Couter of Vincinnes, Indiana.

4-H

Anne Hatley and Steve Dry would represent Stanly County in the National 4-H Citizenship short course in Washington, D.C. July 3-9.

Airport

The outlook for an Albemarle airport looked brighter, according to City Manager Wilson D. Coleman.

There was a possibility the Federal Aviation Agency might approve the existing airport for improvement as a State II facility and participate in the cost of improvements on it.

Superintendent

H.T. “Toby” Webb had named superintendent of Albemarle City Schools, succeeding Claud Grigg, who was retiring after 32 years as head of the system.
