Armory

D.A. Holbrook and Sons of Albemarle was the apparent low bidder on the general contract for the new National Guard armory as bids were opened Tuesday in Raleigh.

Total cost of the new armory, unofficially, will be $611,051. The county would provide $149,964, with the rest coming from federal funds.

Lorch Plumbing and Heating Company of Albemarle was the apparent low bidder on the plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, and Winecoff Electric Company of Albemarle was unofficially the lowest on the electrical contract.

Coach

South Stanly baseball coach Bill Hutchinson was selected as coach of the year in the Rocky River Athletic Conference. The South Stanly team won the championship in the Class 2A conference with a 12-0 record (18-2 overall).

South Stanly placed five players on the all conference team: Jimmy Underwood, senior, catcher; Greg Biles, senior, centerfielder; Mike Gentry, junior, first baseman; Todd Hatley, junior, pitcher and rightfielder; and Greg Rush, junior, catcher.

West Stanly’s Colts, guided by Fred Styles, placed two on the all-star list: Robbie Efird, senior, pitcher and first baseman; and Dexter Efird, senior, pitcher.
