Optimist

David Grigg of Albemarle won first place in the regional elimination contest in Charlotte Tuesday night and became one of four finalists in North Carolina in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for 1981.

Patricia McNeill, also a local and zone winner, came in second place in the Charlotte competition in the girls’ division.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Grigg of Albemarle and a ninth grader at Albemarle High, David competed against four other zone winners in the Mecklenburg-Gaston County region.

Merger

An agreement in principle was reached to merge the First National Bank of Albemarle with First Union National Bank of North Carolina and First Union Corporation.

This was jointly announced Wednesday afternoon by G.T. Rabe Jr., chairman, and Robert T. Mauney, president of the First National Bank, and C.C. Cameron, chairman and president of First Union Corporation.

After the merger, which was expected to be completed in 1981, the First National Bank of Albemarle would become part of First Union National Bank. Assets of First Union National Bank were approximately $3.7 billion, while the First National Bank of Albemarle had assets of approximately $77 million.

4-H

Three Stanly 4-H members were declared district cumulative record winners, according to Diane R. Laughlin, associate extension agent, 4-H. They were Kip Cook (for Communications), David Talley (for Swine) and Gordon Huneycutt (for Wildlife).

The cumulative record is a composite of a 4-H member’s total experiences in 4-H throughout their years as members with emphasis on subject area.
