Westmoreland

Gen. William C. Westmoreland, who was once named Time magazine’s “Man of the Year,” was to speak on National Insurance for Peace March 23 in the Pfeiffer College Chapel.

Westmoreland was the former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of the U.S. Military Forces in Vietnam.

Housing

Albemarle City Council, by a vote of 4 to 1, approved two sites for the construction of an additional 50 public housing units at the board meeting Monday night.

The sites chosen by the Council were 9.4 acres near Metrolina Motors on Little Long Creek and 8.7 acres on Summit Avenue, west of Wall Street.

Plans called for 24 single family dwellings and 13 duplexes.

Broadway

Duke University head football coach Red Wilson had announced the hiring of two assistant football coaches, Rod Broadway and Dick Hopkins.

Broadway, a former All-ACC defensive tackle at North Carolina and assistant coach at East Carolina, will coach the nose guards. He is a 1977 graduate of UNC, where he was a standout defensive player for four seasons. The 25-year-old Oakboro native earned all-conference honors in 1977 and was a member of the Tar Heels’ 1974 Sun Bowl squad and 1977 Liberty Bowl team.

Following graduation, he played one year for the Hamilton Tiger Cats with the Canadian Football League before pursuing a career in coaching. The past two season he had served as nose guard coach at East Carolina.

Contest

Patricia McNeill of Norwood and David Grigg of Albemarle had won the 1981 Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Albemarle Optimist Club. They won first in their divisions Tuesday night at the regular meeting at Mark’s Cafeteria.

They qualified to compete in the Zone 10 contest Thursday at the Royal Oaks Optimist Club in Kannapolis.

Patricia, a seventh grade student at South Stanly High School, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin McNeill of Norwood. David was a ninth grader at Albemarle Senior High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Grigg of Albemarle.

Second place in the girls division was won by Beth Whitley of West Stanly High School. Cynthia Asbury of Albemarle won third. Jarrod Hayes of South Stanly won second place in the boys division, with Stephen Shelton of West Stanly placing third.

Each of the contestants were under 16 and given four to five minutes to speak on “A Commitment To Share.”
