Mother, child flown to Charlotte after car rear-ends logging truck

A woman and one of her children were airlifted to a Charlotte hospital Wednesday after she drove her car into a stopped logging truck, First Sgt. J.M. Jackson of the State Highway Patrol said. There were three children in the car at the time of the accident.
According to Jackson, the wreck happened early Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 52 between Bowers and Cottonville roads, near Norwood.
The woman, who was from Norwood, was driving a 2004 Hyundai when she failed to reduce her speed and collided with the truck which had stopped due to a crew trimming trees off the power lines. Jackson said logs smashed through the vehicle’s windshield when the car hit the back of the truck.
The woman and one of her children, a 9-year-old, suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte while the other two children were taken to Atrium Health Stanly but will be okay.
The identities of the people involved have not been released.
Jackson had no specifics about charges for the mother.
