Four people are in critical condition after a tractor-trailer hit a truck and a Stanly County Schools bus Thursday morning.

Students were injured after a tractor-trailer truck headed westbound on N.C. Highway 24-27 failed to reduce its speed and hit a Ford F-150 truck around 7:19 a.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. The semi then hit school bus No. 80, which was transporting 25 students to West Stanly high and middle schools. It was near Converse Drive, as the bus was awaiting to pick up a student.

Two students, the driver of the semi and driver of the F-150 were in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon, according to the highway patrol. Other students were treated and the bus driver was taken to the hospital, according to SCS. The school system said Friday the two students “remain in Charlotte for additional testing this afternoon.” Other students were treated and discharged from Atrium Health Thursday, SCS said in an online post.

The driver of the semi is facing a reckless driving charge. The identity of the driver will not be released until a report is finished, Highway Patrol said. The F-150’s driver was a minor.

An investigation is ongoing. More information will be posted at thesnaponline.com and in the Weekend Edition of The Stanly News & Press.
