Special Olympics Stanly County conducted its annual Polar Plunge on Saturday at the Badin Lake Swimming Access area.
The event raises money for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the county.
While official results were not available, coordinator Kathy Odell said the goal of $30,000 was most likely surpassed. The organization raised about $25,000 last year and was able to add the sports of softball and cheerleading to their offerings. Flag football has also been added in the last two years.
“All these required equipment and uniforms, so this money will certainly come in handy,” Odell said. “Athletes are never asked to pay for their own uniforms or equipment. Also, we mostly compete with athletes from other counties, so the cost of renting vans and providing meals can become pretty expensive.”

Special Olympian Jamie Hathcock participated in the Polar Plunge once again and was able to raise $5,000.
While Odell is relinquishing her coordinator duties to Joallen Lowder, she says she will still be around for the athletes.
“I don’t think I can ever totally give up my love for all these athletes, and will most likely stay involved behind the scenes,” Odell said.
Anyone age 8 and up can also participate in the many other sports offered locally, including basketball, bowling, swimming and golf.
