KANNAPOLIS – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $5.7 million contract to replace a 71-year-old bridge taking Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue over U.S. 29 in Kannapolis. Contractor NJR Group, Inc. of Albemarle will be handling the project and can begin work as early as mid-February.
Lane closures will be needed on U.S. 29 during the demolition and girder placement phases of the project and will be restricted to overnight hours between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. When necessary, detours will be posted for both eastbound and westbound traffic:
• Eastbound: Ridge Avenue, Jackson Park Road and Little Texas Road
• Westbound: U.S. 29, Jackson Park Road and Ridge Avenue
The new bridge will feature two 16-foot travel lanes, and the road approaching the bridge will be widened in both directions. In addition, sidewalk will be built on both sides of U.S. 29 within the project limits. The ramps to and from Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and U.S. 29 will stay in place when the project is complete.
The contract calls for the new bridge to be open to traffic in October 2026.
