Jane Hartley Van Sinderen, who served the municipalities of Albemarle and New London for 20 years total, died Thursday.
She was 77.
Van Sinderen served from 1991 to 2006 on the Albemarle City Council and from March 2007 to December 2011 on the New London Town Council.
The City of Albemarle posted a statement by Mayor Ronnie Michael on Facebook.
“On behalf of the City of Albemarle, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jane’s family. She was always willing to listen to the concerns of our community and find solutions. Jane’s unwavering commitment and many years of service to Albemarle will always be remembered,” Michael said.
Albemarle Mayor Pro Tem Martha Sue Hall said she was on one side of the dais and Van Sinderen was at the other end.
Hall recalled her fellow council member spoke highly of Jack Neel, a former Albemarle city manager and council member.
“She admired and respected Jack Neel, as did I, and we talked about that a lot,” Hall said. “He had served with her in the earlier years before I came on council and she always spoke so respectful of and appreciative of Jack, and he and Jane and I go back even before council, knowing Jane and her support of other local candidates.”
She retired from Stanly Memorial Hospital, now Atrium Health Stanly.
“Jane was a dedicated colleague and a true friend to everyone at Stanly Memorial Hospital,” said Nicole Williams, a former co-worker. “Her warm smile, kind spirit, and unwavering commitment to the hospital’s radiology department, its patients, and our community, made her someone I was truly honored to work alongside for many years. She will be deeply missed.”
Calvin Gaddy was mayor while Van Sinderen was on the New London Town Council.
“Jane was a dedicated person to the citizens of New London before being on the Board of Commissioners, during her time on the Board and after her term had ended. Her experience on the Albemarle Board was valuable to New London.”
A visitation will be from 10:15-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Stanly Funeral Home of Albemarle. Her funeral will be at 11:40 a.m. in the chapel, followed by burial in New London Town Cemetery.
