Teen arrested in Stanly County following murder of man in Columbia

Columbia Police Department (CPD) investigators have charged a man in connection with a fatal shooting that happened on New Year’s Eve 2024. Charges are pending against a male teen.
According to Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, 20-year-old Sean D. Simmons was arrested and charged with murder, breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent Crime and criminal conspiracy. Simmons is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC).
The teen has been arrested and is housed at the Stanly County Detention Center in Albemarle. He faces the same charges as co-defendant Simmons while awaiting extradition to Columbia. The teen will additionally be charged with possession of a handgun by person under the age of 18.
The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office said the teen is not from Stanly County.
On Dec. 31, 2024, at approximately 10 p.m., while at 3245 Lucius Road (Riverside Apartments), CPD investigators believe the two suspects argued with the victim identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office (RCCO) as 33-year-old Lenny W. Corley Sr. before the fatal shooting.
