Homes of Hope recently recognized James “Jim” Sawyer of Albemarle as its 2025 Volunteer of the Year.
“Jim’s dedication to Homes of Hope Inc. began long before the organization officially took shape,” office manager Amanda Temmermand said. “Alongside his wife, Mary Louise, Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle when the first discussions around creating transitional housing for those in need were just beginning. From those earliest conversations, Jim has been a steady presence, guiding force and faithful supporter of our mission.”
With a background in campaigning and fundraising through decades of service with the Boy Scouts, Sawyer brought a wealth of experience to the table, Temmermand said.
“In retirement, instead of stepping back, he stepped up — offering his time and talents to several organizations across Stanly County, with Homes of Hope Inc. being one of the greatest beneficiaries,” Temmermand said.
“Over the years, Jim has served in many vital roles. He has been a board member, chairman of the annual campaign, sponsor for numerous fundraising efforts and a loyal campaign pledger every single year. But beyond the titles and contributions, Jim and Mary Louise have become cherished members of our HOH family. Their kindness, wisdom and generosity have left a lasting impact not just on the organization, but on the lives of the individuals and families we serve.”
Temmermand said the recognition is more than a “thank you.”
“It’s a celebration of a lifetime of service, a testament to the power of community, and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the difference one person can make when they lead with compassion and commitment,” Temmermand said. “We are immensely grateful for Jim Sawyer. His unwavering support has helped build the foundation of our success, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who follow in his footsteps.”
