Another springtime brings another West Stanly Player production, and this year the WSP are excited to present the classic Cole Porter song and dance musical “Anything Goes” on May 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10 in the West Stanly Players Theatre at WSHS.
The timeless musical is filled with boundless energy and charm and has been a mainstay in the theatre since its debut in 1934. Filled with classic standards like “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “You’re the Top” and electrifying tap dance numbers like “Anything Goes,” the witty dialogue, hilarious characters, and an outlandish plot, the show has been entertaining audiences for decades.
“I have always loved the classic, golden age shows of the 30’s and 40’s,” says WSP director Wes Tucker. “So, after the last few years of more modern and recent plays, I wanted to return to what made musical theatre great.”
“Anything Goes” follows several plots and it dances its way across the deck of the luxury liner, the USS American sailing from New York to London. First, we meet Billy Crocker (played by senior Lawson Smith) who stows away aboard the ship to convince his true love Hope Harcourt (junior Hadley Herrin) not to marry the British aristocrat Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (senior Joseph Coley). Along the way Billy teams up with public enemy No. 13, Moonface Martin (senior Garrett Burris) to assist him in winning Hope’s hand. The action is held together by Reno Sweeny (senior Lena Preslar), an evangelist/nightclub singer there to entertain and to save a few souls. That all results in a hilarious adventure full of mistaken identities and slapstick humor.
Other characters include the socialite mother of the bride, Evangeline Harcourt (senior Sarah Owen); the Moon’s ditsy partner Erma (junior Peyton Ritchie); Billy’s overbearing wall street boss Mr. Whitney (senior William High) and a host of sailors, officers, angels, passengers and others just along for the ride.
“‘Anything Goes’ is the perfect mix of singing, dancing, comedy, romance and fun guaranteed to keep the audience entertained throughout the night.” says Tucker. “Add to that an outstanding group of young actors and dancers who have worked tirelessly to bring this show to the stage, and you have an exciting night on Broadway right here in Stanly County.”
The production runs on May 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. and May 4 at 2:30 p.m. in the WSP Theatre at West Stanly High School. General admission tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Reserved seats can be purchased for $15.
