I am writing to express my deep concern over recent efforts to limit access to knowledge, particularly through the invaluable resource that our local libraries provide.
As members of this community, we understand the critical role libraries play in promoting education, ensuring access to diverse viewpoints and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for our collective future.
Libraries are not just places for books; they are centers of knowledge, creativity and opportunity. For many, they are the only accessible space where learning and growth are nurtured — regardless of age, income or background. Libraries level the playing field, offering access to information, digital literacy programs, free educational workshops and a wealth of resources that would otherwise be unavailable to individuals in need.
I am troubled by recent actions that seem to undermine the accessibility of this essential service.
In a time when knowledge is more important than ever for personal empowerment and societal progress, we cannot afford to make it harder for individuals to access the resources that help them understand the world around them. Libraries should be celebrated, supported, and expanded, not restricted.
I urge you to consider the long-term impact that limiting access to local libraries will have on our community. Restricting or diminishing their role will only widen the gap between those who have access to essential resources and those who do not. Libraries have always been the great equalizers, providing opportunities to everyone, regardless of their background.
We must stand together in support of our libraries, ensuring that they remain pillars of knowledge, inclusivity and community engagement.
I respectfully ask you to reconsider any actions that would inhibit the access to or quality of services that these institutions provide, and instead, to strengthen their role in promoting education for all.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I trust that you will take the necessary steps to preserve and expand the role of our libraries in the community.
