What senior today does not know the black and white hourglass picture and the expression in the opening scene from the TV soap opera “Days of Our Lives” (1965 to 2022)?
“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives.”
This iconic Socrates quote from 400 BC Greece emphasized the relationship man had with time and time-keeping millenniums ago.
The current rotating exhibit at the Oakboro Museum of History has as its theme “It’s about Time.” On display are numerous antiques from Harold Blalock’s clock collecting days. His ongoing hobby has spanned several decades.
Harold and wife Sherry have traveled extensively through North and South Carolina visiting various antique stores and antique auctions. Their interest in clock collecting began with an heirloom clock belonging to his wife’s mother and aunt. His oldest item is a clock with wooden gears from the 1820s.
Of his collection, Blalock spoke of the stately grandfather clock being his favorite. He became knowledgeable on the subject of clocks and has done repairs on them in the past. To augment the exhibit, other owners have lent pieces.
This special rotating exhibit will be available for viewing through May.
Museum hours are Sunday and Monday from 2-4 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.
