The Stanly County Chorale will present its spring concert — “A Night at the Tonys: Broadway’s Best!” — at 7 p.m. April 5 and 3 p.m. April 6 at Albemarle High School auditorium.
“Because this concert celebrates musical theatre, we wanted to perform in a more theatrical setting,” says Lisa Ewers, director of the Chorale.
This concert is a time capsule of the Tony award-winning music performed on Broadway dating back to the award’s inception in 1949.
“I wasn’t sure how to narrow so many years of fantastic music down to an hour and still showcase the well-known hits of timeless shows like ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ while giving equal time to more recent blockbusters like ‘Wicked’ and ‘Avenue Q.’ It was definitely a labor of love,” Ewers said.
All of the songs on this concert, except for one, come from shows that either won the Tony award for Best Musical or were nominated for Best Musical.
“The one outlier has such a fascinating story behind its Broadway show that I have to include it and see if the audience can figure out which song was never actually performed on Broadway,” Ewers said. “This concert won’t just be a performance; it will be a celebration of the human experience. After all, art imitates life, right?”
