Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame to induct three

The Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame will add three new members this summer —two veteran coaches from Stanly County Schools, as well as a retired professional bowler whose career began at Albemarle’s Dogwood Lanes.
The annual induction ceremony is set to take place on at 6 p.m. June 9 at Pfeiffer University’s Merner Gym, and will honor Teresa Davis, standout track and field athlete and coach at North Stanly High School, retired Professional Bowlers Association member and Albemarle native Joe Viscomi, and Larry Wagner, longtime teacher and coach at West Stanly High School.

Teresa Davis
Teresa Davis graduated from North Stanly High School in 1982 following a stellar four years on the Comets Track and Field team.
Davis earned conference “runner of the year” and all-conference honors in each of her four seasons in addition to being selected as MVP Runner for the annual Stanly County Track Meet in her junior and senior years.
She was a sectional champion and regional qualifier in the 400-meter run during her junior season, and set three Rocky River Conference records during her senior campaign (100-, 200- and 400-meter). Her 400-meter records in both the Stanly County and Rocky River Conference meets still stand today.
Davis went on to participate for the Campbell University Track and Field team before returning to Stanly County. She coached the North Stanly Track and Field and Cross-Country teams from 1987 to 2005, and from 2009 to 2023, during which time she earned “Coach of the Year” honors 14 times and earned five conference championships (three in cross-country and two in track).
She was honored as Regional Coach of the Year in 2005, and coached five individual state champions in various events. In addition, she served as cheerleading coach at North Stanly for 18 years.
She is married to Barry Davis, and has a son, Will, and a daughter, Megan, and lives in New London.

Joe Viscomi
Joe Viscomi grew up in Albemarle, and learned to bowl at Dogwood Lanes in East Albemarle, where his accomplishments in local bowling leagues led to his progression through various tournaments, culminating in his qualifying as a member of the Professional Bowlers Association PBA in 1978.
At that time, he began competing in PBA-sanctioned tournaments throughout the southeastern United States. During his 28 professional seasons, Viscomi earned 21 PBA Southern Regional Tour titles, and was named the Southern Regional PBA Bowler of the Year in 1980 and 1985. His 21 tour wins is tied for 45th all time across all PBA regions. In addition, he was a two-time winner (1979 and 1988) of the Bowling Proprietors Association of the Carolinas, automatically qualifying him for the PBA’s US Open Tournament those years.
On the state level, Viscomi was a two-time North Carolina State Champion in 1984. He won the singles scratch division of the NC State Tournament with a 3 game series score of 711 In addition to the coveted “All Events Scratch” division with three-game sets of 595, 700 and 711.
During the course of his career, Joe bowled 36 perfect 300 games (12 sanctioned by the USBC, 12 sanctioned by the PBA and 12 in non-sanctioned bowling tournaments), in addition to four 299 games sanctioned by the USBC, as well as 12 three-game 800 series sanctioned by the USBC.

Larry Wagner
Larry Wagner, a native of Spencer, came to Stanly County in 1971 after eight years in the Richmond, Rowan and Guilford school systems.
He served as a social studies teacher at West Stanly High for the next 32 years, and continued as a member of the school’s coaching staff following his retirement.
Wagner served on the school’s football staff for 40 consecutive seasons, and in public education for 48. The school’s stadium was named after him in 2015 in honor of his contributions to the Colts’ football and track and field programs. He was key in starting West Stanly’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter, and the Larry Wagner Award is presented annually each year to a top Colt athlete.
A 1956 graduate of Spencer High School, Wagner was a football standout, and played in the 1955 Shrine Bowl game along with current Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame member Wade Smith.
In addition, he was selected to play in the annual East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro the following summer, and earned a scholarship to Clemson University, where he was a two-way lineman and a key contributor to three of the Tigers’ ACC Football Championships, including the school’s 1959 Sugar Bowl squad which finished ranked 12th in the nation.
Wagner got his start in public education in 1963 at Rohanen High School in Richmond County, before coming to East Rowan the following year. In 1965, he was named head football coach where he led the Mustangs to a 12-7 record over the next two years, including a 5-1 mark against North, South, and West Rowan, and earning Rowan County “Coach of the Year” honors both seasons.
In 1967, Wagner accepted an assistant principal position at Northeast Guilford, where he remained until coming to West Stanly.
Wagner lives in Albemarle, and was married to the late Amelia Stockton Wagner. They raised two daughters, Karen McCray and Elizabeth Standafer.
